This month we make our return back to our monthly Community Emergency Preparedness classes, after last month's Independence Emergency Preparedness Festival! We look forward to having volunteers and community members in attendance, as the Community EP Classes are always FREE and open to everyone.

The Utility Safety class will feature a presentation over Electricity and Natural Gas safety. The class offers up some great information that applies to our every day safety. So come with an aptitude for learning, and feel free to ask questions!

As per usual, the class will be held in the FEMA Storm Shelter right next to the Emergency Operations Center, located at 950 N. Spring Street, Independence, MO 64050. Parking is on the WEST side of the EOC (entrance from 24 Hwy), or just up the hill on the SOUTHEAST side of the EOC (entrance from Spring Street). Class will kick off at 10AM and will run for approximately an hour and a half.

NOTICE: I have included a flyer for the class along with a map of the parking areas.

See you Saturday morning!

We are looking for any and all able-bodied volunteers for a Debris Pickup Day on June 11th in Independence! It will be physical work, so everyone should dress appropriately.

Here are some suggestions for appropriate attire:
- Full-length pants, No shorts
- No open-toed shoes, sandals, or similar
- Sturdy shoes / boots are encouraged
- Gloves
- Safety glasses / goggles
- Painter's face mask (to cover nose & mouth) if you are allergic to dust, mold, etc

NOTE: It would be very beneficial if you could also bring a rake or two if you have them!

We will meet at 9am on Saturday morning (06/11/2016) at the EOC and divide up into teams. Geoff will have address assignments for everyone at that time.  This is*planned* to be an all day event, so there is not currently a set ending time, though people can leave at any time as needed.
We need you to RSVP so we can make sure we have proper routes, equipment, and transportation. To RSVP, please contact Geoff or the EOC directly.

Are you prepared for disaster?
The Independence Emergency Preparedness Division is offering the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training course.
CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.
The course time is Fridays from 6-10 PM and Saturdays from 8 AM – 5 PM for two consecutive weekends, and it is free.
The courses are currently scheduled to be offered three times in 2016. You can enroll now for the time that best suits your availability. Depending on where you're seeing this information, one of the two following methods will allow you to register for the class of your choosing:
  • In your web browser, navigate to www.indepmoep.org
  • Click on CERT
  • Click Events Calendar
  • Select the month you want to attend (March, June, or September)
  • Click the “CERT Basic Training" course box for details and registration
Click on the link below that correlates to the training dates you wish to attend.
March 18, 19, 25, 26
June 17, 18, 24, 25

We look forward to training more citizens in 2016!
